Introduction
Virecta is a safe and effective oral medication for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) in men; ED is the inability to sustain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual function, and satisfactory treatment requires relaxation of the body's smooth muscle to stimulate an erection. Sildenafil citrate is a selective phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor that increases the amount of nitric oxide (NO) released by the body upon sexual stimulation.
Use
· For the treatment of erectile dysfunction - ED, this drug is usually taken orally as needed, as directed by a physician. Sildenafil should be taken at least 30 minutes but no more than 4 hours before intercourse (1 hour before is most effective).
· A high-fat diet may delay the rapid action of this drug.
· Dosage will depend on your medical condition, your response to treatment, and other medications you are taking. Tell your doctor and pharmacist about all medications you are taking (including prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications).
Contraindications
· Patients with known hypersensitivity to sildenafil or any of the ingredients in the tablets.
· In patients receiving organic nitrates, concomitant use with Viasta may potentiate the antihypertensive effects of nitrates.
· Use in infants, children, and women is contraindicated.
· Patients with a history of cardiovascular disease, optic atrophy, or visual field defects.
· Patients with erections lasting longer than 4 hours (painful erections lasting longer than 6 hours) should seek immediate medical attention. Failure to initiate treatment immediately may result in damage to penile tissue and irreversible loss of its effect.
Dosage and Administration
For adult use
The recommended dose is 50 mg approximately 1 hour prior to sexual activity. The dose may be increased up to 100 mg or decreased to 25 mg depending on efficacy and tolerability. The maximum recommended dose is 100 mg. The maximum recommended dose is once daily. If Viagra is taken with food, the onset of activity may be delayed compared to fasting
Special groups
Elderly.
In elderly patients (65 years and older), dosage adjustment is not necessary.
Renal Impairment.
The dosage and administration listed under "Use in Adults" is indicated for patients with mild to moderate renal impairment (creatinine clearance = 30-80 ml/min).
In patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <30 ml/min), a 25 mg dose should be considered due to decreased clearance of sildenafil. The dose may be increased to 50 mg or 100 mg as needed depending on efficacy and tolerability.
Mechanism of Action
Viagra has a 90% success rate. Viagra works by relaxing blood vessels in the penis, allowing more blood to flow and increasing pressure. Viagra also maintains blood pressure in the penis, which helps maintain erections and allow the patient to enjoy a healthy sex life.
Side Effects
As with all medications, side effects are possible, but those caused by Viagra are usually minor. Side effects associated with Viagra use may include visual disturbances (light sensitivity, differences in perception of blue and green colors), digestive problems, facial flushing, and headache. If in doubt, ask your doctor or health care professional before using Viagra. Men who are taking medications containing nitrates, such as heart medications or medications to control angina, should not use Viagra.
